So, are you the stick or are you the carrot?

Most people fall into two camps:

1) You are afraid of being hit with a stick, or
2) You are driven towards the promise of the carrot.

Now, the reason why I am talking about this today, is that this week we have had to overcome a few hurdles, and I am sharing this with you because I think it is important that as well as hearing about our wins, we also hear about our fails as well (which we should not feel ashamed of talking about).

So, this week we did a few things that did not work out, heads went down a little bit, and then I kind of sat down and thought, do you know what, where am I naturally drawn to and I was naturally drawn towards the carrot.

I am sitting there thinking, “well, that did not work out, I am not going to waste any more time looking at that, or waste any more time on that scenario, I’m now focused back on to looking for where that carrot is, where that promise is.”

Now, alternatively, somebody else might think, “Well, I don’t really want to go through that again, and I’m going to do everything I can to avoid going back into that situation and stop wasting that time or having that pain now.“

Both are fine, and both are justified points of view which ultimately end up getting you to the same place. But what is fascinating is that we all fall into either, the one who is afraid of the stick, or the one who is more tuned in to the promise of the carrot.

Which one are you?

Now it’s your turn.

Take a few scenarios that have happened to you over the last couple of weeks and decide whether you have been motivated by the carrot or the stick.

Once you have identified these, put yourself in the opposite position and see if you would have dealt with the scenario differently, you might be quite surprised!
